Nightcrawler (2014)

I finally got around to watching "Nightcrawler" last night. And it was one hell of a movie.

Jake Gyllenhaal was amazing, even more so than usual. His performance had his patented earnestness. But he also oozed creepiness, and he really sold his character being in control on a level that reminds me of Hannibal Lector. Just great acting from Jake. And Rene Russo was a relevation. She nailed the role of the hard-bitten and desperate news producer. And she was looking better than ever at 60. Together, Jake and Rene had great chemistry on screen, which made their relationship totally believable. Their relationship was largely off-screen, but hints were dropped here and there. I liked that a lot. Kudos to Riz Ahmed, Kevin Rahm, and Bill Paxton (R.I.P.) in supporting roles.

Also, I really loved how the film brought L.A. to life, made the city its own character. L.A. seems like a really cool place to cruise around all day and night.

The writing was excellent. Everyone had interesting things to say and do. I particularly liked the verbal fencing between Jake and Rene's characters as they teased out their relationship. There really isn't much of a plot besides seeing how far Jake's character could go, if his actions would have consequences. But that was still plenty suspenseful.

Highly recommended.
