The Lives of Others (2006)

15 June 2011

Another one from Netflix. Its a German film that won a Best Foreign Film Oscar a few years ago. And deservedly so. It is an amazing film.

The story and writing is genius. Christa, the lead female, is basically a macguffin, who drives the plot at the beginning and end of the movie. The movie becomes a statement about corruption and a bankrupty system. And on top of all that is the Wiesler character who gets sucked in and has to make his choice. The twist at the end of the movie is perfect and makes so much sense. All of the characters are interesting and compelling from start to finish. Besides Wiesler, I especially liked Christa, a tragic female character who is caught.

The acting was all spot on. They're all German, so I'm not going to dig and name names. The guy who played Wiesler is brilliant, The guy who played Dreyman also does a fantastic job. I especially like that his character doesn't fall into cliche. As I mentioned, I like the Christa character, part because she's well writtena and part because she's so well acted. The scene were she comes home and has to shower was devastating.

The production of movie is amazing. The portrayal of early 80s East Germany looking like something straight out of Gattaca was weirdly impressive. The buildings, the decor, the costumes, the cars, it was all added up to produce a bizzaro world that I can believe what a bland socialist 'utopia' looks like.
